HEALTH PYRAMID - LEVEL 4
CONNECTION & ENVIRONMENT
Relationships • Community • Environment • Nature • Technology • Sleep Environment
Level 4 is where health moves beyond what we eat, how we exercise and what happens inside our bodies. It asks us to look at the people, places and everyday surroundings that repeatedly influence how we feel.
This guide is not a test and it is definitely not an invitation to make your home, relationships or screen habits perfect. Use it to notice what is working, what feels draining, and what small changes could make your everyday environment more supportive.
Choose a few things that matter to you. You do not need to overhaul your entire life this weekend.

The area I most want to work on right now is:
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
1. Relationships
Relationships can be a source of safety, belonging, laughter and resilience. They can also become a source of chronic stress. Healthy does not mean conflict-free. It means there is enough respect, honesty, reciprocity and room for boundaries that you do not have to disappear in order to keep the relationship.
Check-In
☐ I have people around whom I can be myself.
☐ I can communicate needs without constantly fearing the response.
☐ I can set at least some boundaries around my time, energy and privacy.
☐ My closest relationships include reciprocity over time.
☐ I recognize that loving someone does not require unlimited access to me.
☐ I am willing to repair relationships when repair is healthy and possible.
Questions to Sit With
Which relationships make me feel safest and most like myself?

Where am I over-giving because I am afraid of disappointing someone?

2. Community
Community is the feeling that we belong somewhere beyond ourselves. It can grow through friendships, neighborhoods, volunteering, schools, faith communities, advocacy, hobbies, work or shared experiences. Sometimes we find community. Sometimes we have to build it.
Check-In
☐ I have at least one community or group where I feel connected.
☐ I make room for friendships outside of immediate responsibilities.
☐ I am willing to be the person who reaches out or invites someone.
☐ I have considered volunteering or giving back in a way that is meaningful to me.
☐ My community involvement fits my capacity instead of exhausting me.
☐ My online communities generally leave me feeling connected rather than depleted.
Questions to Sit With
Where do I feel that I belong?

3. Environment
Our homes become part of our daily health environment. Air quality, moisture, smoke, cleaning products, fragrance, water, clutter and basic safety all deserve attention, but the goal is informed choices rather than fear. Reduce meaningful exposures where practical, then live in your house.
Check-In
☐ I use ventilation when cooking, showering or using stronger cleaning products.
☐ I address leaks, dampness or visible moisture instead of simply covering odors.
☐ I never mix cleaning chemicals.
☐ I know that HEPA filtration helps particles but does not remove every gas or VOC.
☐ I am thoughtful about fragrance and laundry products if anyone in my household is sensitive.
☐ My smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms are maintained.
☐ I know what I am actually trying to remove before purchasing a water filter.
Questions to Sit With
What is one free environmental change I can make?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Is there a room that feels visually or physically stressful?

4. Nature
Nature can support well-being without becoming another wellness performance. Green space, water, daylight, outdoor movement and simply stepping away from screens can create opportunities for restoration. Houseplants can bring nature indoors too, although ordinary numbers of plants should not be treated as replacements for ventilation or filtration.
Check-In
☐ I get outside or into natural light regularly when conditions allow.
☐ I have an outdoor place nearby that I enjoy.
☐ I check air quality or weather when conditions may make outdoor time unsafe.
☐ I know that sunlight, circadian light cues and vitamin D are related but not identical.
☐ If I keep houseplants, I choose them with pet/child safety and realistic care in mind.
☐ I allow outdoor time to count even when it is not exercise.
Questions to Sit With
Where do I naturally feel calmer outside?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
What outdoor habit could I attach to something I already do?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
What would make nature easier to access in the season I am in?
____________________________________________________________________________________________

One Small Step
This week I will:
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
5. Technology
Technology can connect, educate, entertain and improve access to healthcare. It can also quietly consume attention. The goal is not the lowest possible Screen Time number. It is knowing whether your technology is serving your life or constantly interrupting it.
Check-In
☐ I know my actual average daily screen time.
☐ I know which apps take most of my attention.
☐ I have turned off notifications that do not deserve to interrupt me.
☐ I have at least one phone-free time or place.
☐ I notice when social media changes my mood or pulls me into comparison.
☐ I have a plan for where my phone lives at night.
☐ I sometimes allow myself to be bored instead of filling every pause with a screen.
Questions to Sit With
How much of my phone time is intentional?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
What app gives me the least value for the time it takes?

6. Sleep Environment
A sleep-supportive bedroom removes unnecessary obstacles. Darkness, comfortable temperature, sound, air quality, mattress and pillow comfort, technology and what the brain associates with the bed can all influence sleep. Expensive sleep technology cannot replace evaluation of an underlying sleep disorder.
Check-In
☐ My bedroom is dark enough for sleep.
☐ The temperature and bedding are comfortable for me.
☐ Noise is quiet or consistently masked when needed.
☐ My mattress and pillow support my body comfortably.
☐ My phone is not making nighttime checking effortless.
☐ My bedroom feels more like a place to rest than an unfinished office or storage room.
☐ If I shop for a mattress, I look at comfort, materials and meaningful third-party certifications rather than fear-based marketing.
Questions to Sit With
What is the biggest environmental obstacle to my sleep?

What can I change tonight for free?

☐ Check smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms.
☐ Read your local drinking-water report or review appropriate well testing.
☐ Avoid routinely heating food in plastic when glass or another suitable container is easy to use.
☐ Clear one high-use surface or walkway.

Bedroom Sleep Audit
☐ Comfortably cool temperature.
☐ Dark enough for sleep.
☐ Noise controlled or masked.
☐ Air quality comfortable.
☐ Mattress supportive and comfortable.
☐ Pillow appropriate for my sleeping position.
☐ Phone location supports sleep.
☐ Television or screens are not routinely extending bedtime.
☐ Bedroom clutter is manageable.
☐ Partner/pet/household disruptions have been considered.
☐ Morning light is part of my wake-up environment.
Mattress Shopping Quick Guide
☐ Choose comfort and support before marketing language.
☐ Consider sleeping position, body size, pain, temperature and mobility.
☐ Ask what materials are actually inside.
☐ Look for relevant third-party certifications when they matter to you.
☐ Understand what each certification covers rather than assuming it certifies the whole mattress.
☐ Ask how the mattress meets flammability requirements if that is important to you.
☐ Check the trial and return policy.
☐ Ventilate a new mattress if a new-product odor bothers you.
☐ Do not spend beyond your means because fear-based advertising told you to.
Certifications you may encounter: GREENGUARD Gold (low chemical emissions), GOTS (qualifying organic textiles and processing), GOLS (qualifying organic latex), CertiPUR-US (flexible polyurethane foam), and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 (tested textile components/products for listed harmful substances). Always verify the scope of the certification on the product you are considering.
Nature & Indoor Greenery Check-In
☐ Get daytime light when practical.
☐ Take one short outdoor break without scrolling.
☐ Use a nearby park, trail, beach or other green/blue space.
☐ Choose outdoor movement I actually enjoy.
☐ Check outdoor air quality during wildfire smoke or high-pollution days.
☐ If adding houseplants, choose for actual light/care conditions.
☐ Check plant safety for pets and young children.
☐ Remember that plants add nature and enjoyment, but ordinary houseplants do not replace HEPA filtration or ventilation.

7-Day Level 4 Reset
Day 1 - Relationships: Reach out to one person you genuinely care about.
Day 2 - Community: Show up somewhere: a group, class, local event, volunteer opportunity or even coffee with someone new.
Day 3 - Environment: Make one free healthy-home change: ventilate, clear a surface, check an alarm, simplify fragrance or address a moisture issue.
Day 4 - Nature: Spend at least ten intentional minutes outside or in a green/blue space.
Day 5 - Technology: Turn off nonessential notifications and create one phone-free period.
Day 6 - Sleep Environment: Move the phone, darken the room, adjust temperature or solve the biggest obvious sleep-environment problem.
Day 7 - Review: Notice which change actually made your life feel calmer, safer, more connected or more restorative. Keep that one.

The Point of Level 4
Connection and environment are not extras. They are the background conditions in which the rest of our health habits have to live.
The goal is not to have the perfect friend group, volunteer every weekend, live in a toxin-free showroom, spend hours in the woods, throw away your phone or build a luxury sleep sanctuary.
The goal is to notice what surrounds you every day and ask a better question: is this helping me live well, or is it quietly making life harder?
Healthy environments can be built slowly. One boundary. One friendship. One room. One walk. One notification turned off. One better night of sleep.
Sometimes the most powerful health changes are not dramatic. They are the small things we stop accepting as background noise.
Educational & Safety Note
This guide is for education and self-reflection and does not replace individualized medical, mental-health, environmental, veterinary, building or safety advice. Persistent sleep symptoms, significant respiratory symptoms, suspected carbon-monoxide exposure, serious chemical exposure, unsafe relationships or other urgent concerns require appropriate professional help. Product certifications and environmental recommendations should always be verified for the specific product, household and use case.
