Level 4: Connection & Environment

Your home does not have to be perfect. It should be a place where your body can exhale.

When we think about health, we usually think about what we eat, how much we move, how well we sleep, what supplements we take and what our lab work says. But we spend an enormous amount of our lives inside our homes, breathing the air, sleeping in the rooms, wearing clothes washed in products we chose and touching surfaces cleaned with products we may use every day.

Our environment matters.

I have become very intentional about my own home. I have an air purifier in every room, and I am conscious about how I scent my home. I still want my house to smell beautiful, but I prefer more naturally derived options instead of automatically filling every room with conventional plug-ins or heavily fragranced products. I also pay attention to what I use for cleaning and laundry because those products do not simply disappear after we use them. They become part of the environment we live in.

At the same time, I do not want this conversation to become another corner of wellness that makes people afraid of their own house. The internet can convince you that your couch, candle, shampoo, cookware, water bottle, laundry detergent and shower curtain are all trying to kill you before breakfast.

That is not what this is about.

This is about understanding the exposures that have good evidence behind them, making reasonable changes where we can, and creating a home that supports our physical and emotional health without requiring perfection.

Indoor Air: We Breathe It All Day

Indoor air quality can be affected by particles and gases from many sources, including cooking, smoke, dust, pets, outdoor pollution, wildfire smoke, building materials, cleaning products and fragrances. Moisture problems can also contribute to mold growth.

The goal is not sterile air. It is reducing meaningful pollutants and improving ventilation where possible.

  • Ventilate when you can. Opening windows can help when outdoor air quality and weather are appropriate. Kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans also matter.

  • Use the kitchen exhaust. Cooking, especially frying or high-heat cooking, can generate particles and gases. A range hood vented outdoors is especially helpful when available.

  • Control moisture. Fix leaks, use bathroom ventilation and address persistent dampness. Moisture control is central to mold prevention.

  • Keep smoke outside. Tobacco and other combustion smoke can significantly affect indoor air.

  • Watch outdoor air quality. During wildfire smoke or high-pollution days, keeping windows closed and filtering indoor air may make more sense than bringing outdoor air in.

Air Purifiers: What They Can and Cannot Do

Air purifiers are one of the tools I personally use throughout my home. A properly sized portable air cleaner with a high-efficiency particulate filter can reduce airborne particles such as dust, pollen, smoke particles and some pet-related particles.

But an air purifier is not magic. HEPA filtration is designed for particles. It does not automatically remove every gas, odor or volatile organic compound. Some units include activated carbon or other sorbent material intended to reduce certain gases and odors, but performance varies.

  • Look for true particle filtration. HEPA filtration is a useful benchmark for airborne particles.

  • Size it for the room. A tiny unit in a huge open space may not move enough air to make much difference.

  • Pay attention to CADR. Clean Air Delivery Rate can help compare how quickly a unit filters particles.

  • Change filters. A purifier with an overdue filter cannot perform as intended.

  • Avoid intentionally generating ozone. Ozone is a lung irritant and ozone-generating air cleaners are not a healthy way to clean occupied indoor air.

  • Put the purifier where air can move around it. Do not bury the intake behind furniture or curtains.

Home Fragrance: A Home Can Smell Beautiful Without Being Overwhelming

Scent is emotional. A smell can make a home feel clean, cozy, seasonal or familiar. I love having my home smell good. I have simply become more thoughtful about how I create that scent.

Fragranced products can release volatile compounds into indoor air, and some people are particularly sensitive to fragrance. Burning candles also produces combustion particles. That does not mean every scented product is automatically dangerous at ordinary use levels, and 'natural' does not automatically mean harmless either.

Essential oils and naturally derived fragrances can still irritate some people, trigger symptoms in sensitive individuals and be unsafe for certain pets or children depending on the oil, concentration and exposure. The word natural is not a safety guarantee.

My approach is intentional rather than fearful: use less, ventilate, avoid constantly scenting every room, and choose products that work for the people and animals living in the home.

  • Start with the source of an odor. Ventilation, trash removal, laundry and cleaning solve more than covering an odor with fragrance.

  • Use fragrance selectively. Your home does not need to smell strongly scented twenty-four hours a day.

  • Pay attention to symptoms. Headache, coughing, wheezing or irritation around a product is useful information.

  • Be careful with pets. Some essential oils can pose risks to animals. Check veterinary guidance before diffusing oils around pets.

  • Ventilate after burning candles. Combustion changes indoor air, even when a candle smells wonderful.

Cleaning Products Become Part of Your Indoor Environment

Cleaning is important for hygiene, allergens and maintaining a healthy home, but stronger is not always better. Many routine jobs do not require the harshest product on the shelf.

Sprays and aerosols can increase what becomes airborne while we clean. Some products can irritate the eyes, skin or respiratory tract. Good ventilation and following the label matter.

The Most Important Cleaning Rule

Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. Mixing bleach with ammonia or acids can create dangerous gases. More chemicals do not equal more clean.

  • Use the simplest product that does the job. Soap or detergent and water are enough for many routine cleaning tasks.

  • Disinfect when there is a reason. Cleaning and disinfecting are different. Not every surface needs constant disinfection.

  • Ventilate. Run an exhaust fan or open a window when conditions allow, especially with stronger products.

  • Avoid breathing the spray. Apply products according to label directions and avoid creating unnecessary airborne mist.

  • Store products safely. Keep cleaning products in original containers and away from children and pets.

  • Wear protection when directed. Gloves, eye protection or other precautions on the label are there for a reason.

Laundry: We Wear the Residue

Laundry products are interesting because our clothing, towels and bedding stay against our skin and close to our faces for hours. Detergents are designed to wash away soils, but fragrance products such as scent boosters, fabric softeners and dryer sheets are often specifically designed to leave fragrance behind.

For many people, fragranced laundry products are simply a preference. For people with eczema, allergies, asthma, fragrance sensitivity or easily irritated skin, fragrance-free and dye-free products may be more comfortable.

You do not have to overhaul your laundry room overnight. If you want to reduce fragrance exposure, start with the easiest changes.

  • Try fragrance-free detergent. Especially if anyone in the household has sensitive skin or reacts to scents.

  • Skip scent boosters. They are optional, not necessary for clean clothing.

  • Consider skipping fabric softener. It is not required for hygiene and can leave coatings on fabric.

  • Try wool dryer balls. They can help separate clothing in the dryer without adding fragrance.

  • Do not assume more detergent is cleaner. Excess detergent can leave residue and may make rinsing more difficult.

  • Wash new clothing before wearing when practical. This can remove some manufacturing residues, excess dye and handling contaminants.

Dust, Allergens and What Comes In on Our Shoes

Household dust is a mixture of fibers, skin cells, soil, pollen and particles from both indoor and outdoor sources. Regular cleaning can reduce dust and allergens without requiring a perfectly spotless home.

  • Vacuum regularly. A vacuum with good filtration can help capture fine particles rather than redistributing them.

  • Damp dust. A slightly damp cloth often captures dust better than sending it back into the air.

  • Wash bedding. This is particularly useful for people with dust-mite allergies.

  • Consider shoes off at the door. Shoes can track soil, pesticides and other outdoor material indoors.

  • Groom pets appropriately. If pet allergens are an issue, cleaning and bedroom boundaries may help in addition to medical allergy management.

Mold and Moisture: Fix the Water First

Mold needs moisture. If you see or smell persistent mold, the important question is where the moisture is coming from.

A recurring leak, damp basement, roof problem, plumbing issue or chronically humid bathroom cannot be solved by repeatedly spraying fragrance or bleach over the visible spot while the water problem continues.

Small areas may sometimes be manageable with appropriate cleaning and moisture control, while larger contamination, sewage involvement or significant building damage may require professional assessment. People with asthma, allergies, immune concerns or significant respiratory symptoms should be especially thoughtful about exposure during cleanup.

Water: Know What You Are Filtering For

Water filters are another area where marketing can make people feel as if they need the most expensive system available. The better starting point is understanding your water source and what you actually want to reduce.

Municipal water systems provide water-quality reports, and private wells require different testing considerations. Filter certifications are contaminant-specific. A filter that reduces chlorine taste is not automatically designed to reduce lead, PFAS or every other contaminant.

I like the idea of filtering intentionally rather than buying a system because the advertisement lists a hundred frightening words. Know your water, identify your priorities and choose a certified system designed for those priorities.

  • Read your local water-quality report. Municipal utilities publish information about regulated contaminants.

  • Test private wells appropriately. Well owners have different responsibilities for monitoring water quality.

  • Look for independent certification. NSF/ANSI certifications can help identify what a particular filter has been tested to reduce.

  • Maintain the filter. Replacement schedules matter.

  • Remember minerals are not automatically contaminants. Water chemistry is more nuanced than 'remove everything.'

Plastics: Reduce the Easy Exposures Without Trying to Eliminate Plastic From Earth

Microplastics are being detected in the environment, food, water and human tissues, and researchers are actively studying what those exposures mean for human health. There are still important questions about dose, sources and clinical significance.

I do not think the answer is panic. Plastic is embedded in modern life. But there are simple places where reducing unnecessary exposure makes sense.

  • Avoid heating food in plastic when practical. Heat can increase migration of some chemicals from certain food-contact materials.

  • Use glass or stainless steel for hot foods and drinks when convenient. This is an easy substitution for many households.

  • Replace badly damaged food containers. Scratched, warped or degraded containers do not need to last forever.

  • Do not chase perfection. One plastic container does not undo an otherwise healthy life.

The Kitchen: Health Starts Before the Food Reaches Your Plate

A healthy kitchen is not only about ingredients. Ventilation, food safety, storage and the way the space is organized can influence daily habits.

  • Use ventilation while cooking. Especially with gas cooking or high-heat methods.

  • Keep healthy options visible. Environment influences behavior. Put the foods you want to reach for where they are easy to see and use.

  • Store food safely. Follow refrigeration and food-safety guidance rather than relying only on smell.

  • Keep cutting boards and surfaces appropriately clean. Preventing cross-contamination matters more than making the room smell like disinfectant.

The Bedroom: Your Nervous System Needs Somewhere to Land

We will talk specifically about the sleep environment later in Level 4, but the bedroom also belongs in this broader environmental conversation.

I love the idea that your bedroom should send a message at the end of the day: you are done. You are safe here. You can stop performing, answering and accomplishing for a little while.

That does not require an expensive mattress, designer bedding or a perfectly staged room. It may mean reducing clutter, controlling light, keeping the temperature comfortable, filtering the air if useful, washing bedding regularly and removing the things that make the room feel like another office.

Clutter and the Mental Load of a Room

A messy house is not a moral failure. People are busy. Children live there. Pets live there. Illness happens. Laundry multiplies when nobody is watching.

But visual clutter can increase feelings of cognitive overload or stress for some people, and unfinished tasks can become constant visual reminders of what still needs attention.

The answer does not have to be minimalism. It can simply be making the space easier for your brain to use.

  • Clear one surface. Do not start by reorganizing the entire house.

  • Give frequently used items a home. Systems reduce repeated decision-making.

  • Remove things you genuinely do not use. Less inventory means less to organize and clean.

  • Use closed storage if visual clutter bothers you. You do not have to display everything you own.

  • Make the system realistic. A beautiful organization system nobody in the house will follow is decoration, not a system.

The Bathroom and Personal-Care Environment

Bathrooms combine moisture, cleaning products, personal-care products and often limited ventilation. Run the exhaust fan during and after showers when appropriate, address persistent moisture and keep an eye on areas where mold can develop.

Personal-care products can also add layers of fragrance. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, perfume, hair products and laundry fragrance may all be present at once. If you are sensitive, reducing the number of fragranced layers can be an easy experiment.

Again, this is not about declaring every beauty product toxic. It is about noticing total exposure and how your own body responds.

The Boring Safety Things May Matter More Than the Trendy Wellness Things

  • Smoke alarms. Test them and replace batteries or units according to manufacturer guidance.

  • Carbon monoxide alarms. Especially important in homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached garages.

  • Medication storage. Keep medications appropriately stored and away from children or anyone for whom access could be unsafe.

  • Fall prevention. Loose rugs, dark stairs and cluttered walkways matter.

  • Radon. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and a leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Testing homes is recommended in many areas.

  • Fire extinguishers and escape planning. Wellness is also knowing how to get out of the house safely.

Please Do Not Turn Your Home Into Another Thing to Be Anxious About

This may be the most important section in this entire article.

There is an enormous wellness industry built around convincing us that ordinary life is toxic. Once you start looking, you can find someone online warning you about almost everything in your house.

That can create a strange situation where a person is spending hundreds or thousands of dollars trying to optimize every environmental exposure while the anxiety created by trying to control all of those exposures is affecting their quality of life.

We can care about indoor air without fearing the air. We can choose different cleaning products without believing one use of a conventional product has poisoned us. We can reduce plastic without throwing away an entire kitchen. We can enjoy scent while being thoughtful about ventilation and sensitivity.

Reduce unnecessary exposures where it is reasonable. Focus first on the things with strong evidence: smoke, carbon monoxide, radon, mold and moisture, ventilation, particulate pollution, safe chemical use and clean drinking water. Then make the smaller choices that fit your preferences, health needs and budget.

And then live in your house.

Healthy Home Audit: Free or Low-Cost Changes

☐ Open windows when outdoor air quality and weather make ventilation appropriate.

☐ Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans.

☐ Fix leaks and persistent moisture.

☐ Take shoes off near the entrance when practical.

☐ Damp dust and vacuum regularly.

☐ Reduce unnecessary fragrance if anyone is sensitive.

☐ Skip laundry scent boosters or fabric softener if you want less fragrance exposure.

☐ Use only the amount of detergent recommended.

☐ Never mix cleaning chemicals.

☐ Move clutter out of one high-use area.

☐ Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

☐ Review your local drinking-water report.

☐ Avoid routinely heating food in plastic when another container is easy to use.

☐ Create at least one room or corner that feels visually calm.

Healthy Home Audit: Optional Investments

☐ A properly sized HEPA air purifier for rooms where filtration would be useful.

☐ A vacuum with effective filtration.

☐ A dehumidifier for persistently humid areas when appropriate.

☐ A water filter independently certified for the contaminants you actually want to reduce.

☐ Glass or stainless-steel food-storage containers for hot foods.

☐ Wool dryer balls if you want to replace fragranced dryer products.

☐ Radon testing or mitigation if indicated.

☐ Professional evaluation for significant moisture, mold, ventilation or indoor-air problems.

Room-by-Room Quick Check

Kitchen

☐ Is ventilation working?

☐ Are cleaning products stored safely?

☐ Am I routinely heating food in plastic when I could easily use glass?

Bedroom

☐ Does this room feel restful?

A Home Should Feel Like Yours

Creating a healthy home is not about building a laboratory. It is about creating an environment that supports the life happening inside it.

For me, there is something meaningful about being intentional with my home. The air purifiers, the scents I choose, the products I bring in and the way the rooms feel are all small pieces of creating a space that feels good to live in.

And there is an emotional side to that too. When you have entered a new chapter of life, creating a home that feels peaceful, safe and truly yours can mean much more than decorating.

A healthy home is not necessarily the biggest, cleanest, most expensive or most perfectly organized house.

It is a place where you can walk through the door and feel your shoulders come down.
