MOVEMENT: PART TWO
What Happens When We Don't Move Enough
Now that we understand how much movement does for the body, we need to look at the other side of it: what happens when we don't get enough.
Before we go any further, I want to make something very clear.
This is not a guilt trip.
There are so many reasons someone might not be moving as much as they would like to.Maybe you sit behind a desk all day. Maybe you're exhausted by the time you get home. Maybe you're raising children, caring for aging parents or working multiple jobs. Maybe you're dealing with pain. Maybe your body doesn't move the way it used to. Maybe you're living with an illness or disability that makes movement complicated. Maybe your mental health is taking every ounce of energy you have right now. Or maybe life simply got busy and movement slowly disappeared from your routine.
Whatever the reason, understanding what inactivity can do to the body isn't about shame. It's about information.Just like our bodies respond when we use them, they also adapt when we don't.
THE BODY ADAPTS TO WHAT WE ASK OF IT
The human body is incredibly adaptable. When we regularly challenge our muscles, they adapt. When we practice balance, our balance can improve. When we walk regularly, our bodies become more accustomed to walking.
But adaptation works in the other direction too.
When we stop asking our bodies to do certain things, our bodies have less reason to maintain those abilities.
This does not happen because you missed a workout or took a few days off. Rest is important. The concern is prolonged inactivity and long periods of sedentary behavior over time.
MUSCLES CAN BECOME WEAKER
When muscles aren't being challenged regularly, we can gradually lose strength and muscle mass. Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as we age.
Muscle isn't just about appearance. It helps us carry groceries, climb stairs, get out of a chair, lift things, maintain posture, protect our joints and catch ourselves if we lose our balance.
Those ordinary activities are some of the biggest reasons strength matters.
CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS CAN DECLINE
Your heart and lungs adapt to activity too. When we're consistently inactive, cardiovascular fitness can decrease and activities that once felt easy may begin to feel harder.
This can create a cycle. Movement feels harder, so we avoid it. Because we avoid it, our conditioning can decrease further. Then movement feels even harder.
Breaking that cycle doesn't necessarily require a dramatic workout plan. Sometimes it starts with a few minutes of appropriate movement.
JOINTS CAN FEEL STIFFER
Have you ever sat in one position for a long time, stood up and suddenly felt about 30 years older?
Same. 😂
Movement helps maintain mobility and keeps the muscles surrounding our joints working. Long periods of inactivity can contribute to stiffness and reduced mobility.
That does not mean someone experiencing pain should simply push through it. Pain can be important information. The appropriate type and amount of movement may look very different from one person to another.
The goal is not to force a body to do something it cannot safely do. The goal is to discover what it can do safely and consistently.
BONE HEALTH CAN BE AFFECTED
Bones are living tissue and respond to physical stress. Weight bearing and resistance activities help stimulate the processes involved in maintaining bone strength.
As we age, maintaining bone density becomes increasingly important, especially because weaker bones can make falls more consequential.
This is another reminder that movement is about much more than weight or appearance. It is part of protecting the structure that supports us.
BLOOD SUGAR AND METABOLIC HEALTH CAN CHANGE
Our muscles use glucose for energy. When muscles contract during activity, they can take up glucose and regular physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity.
When activity levels remain low, we miss some of those metabolic benefits.
This is one reason small periods of movement throughout the day can matter. Movement doesn't only count when it happens during an official workout.
LONG PERIODS OF SITTING AFFECT CIRCULATION
When we sit still for extended periods, the muscles in our legs aren't contracting as frequently to assist blood flow back toward the heart.
Standing up, changing position or walking periodically can help break up long sedentary periods.
Sometimes movement simply means getting out of the chair.
BALANCE AND COORDINATION CAN DECLINE
Balance is something many of us don't think about until it becomes more difficult.
Strength, coordination, vision, the nervous system and the inner ear all contribute to balance. Like many physical abilities, balance benefits from being practiced.
Maintaining strength and balance becomes especially important as we age because preventing falls can help preserve mobility and independence.
MOOD AND MOVEMENT CAN AFFECT EACH OTHER
The relationship between movement and mental wellbeing can work in both directions.
When we're struggling emotionally, finding the motivation to move can feel incredibly difficult. At the same time, regular physical activity can support mood, stress regulation and overall mental wellbeing.
This is why telling someone to “just go work out” isn't always helpful.
A better question might be: What is one small way I could move my body today?
Maybe it's walking to the mailbox. Maybe it's stretching for five minutes. Maybe it's putting on one song and moving around the kitchen. Maybe it's taking a short walk.
Small still counts.
ENERGY CAN BECOME A CYCLE TOO
When we're exhausted, movement may be the last thing we feel like doing. But prolonged inactivity can contribute to deconditioning, which can make everyday activities require more effort.
For many people, gradually increasing appropriate activity can improve stamina over time.
But not every kind of fatigue should be pushed through. Some illnesses and medical conditions can cause significant fatigue or exercise intolerance. Movement should be appropriate for the individual, and medical guidance may be necessary when symptoms, illness, injury or disability affect activity.
THE LESS WE MOVE, THE HARDER MOVEMENT CAN FEEL
This may be one of the most important takeaways.
Inactivity can become a cycle.
We move less. We may lose some strength, mobility or conditioning. Movement begins to feel harder. Because it feels harder, we move even less.
The way out doesn't have to be dramatic.
Five minutes counts. A short walk counts. Stretching counts. Gentle strength work counts. Dancing counts. Standing and moving after sitting for a long time counts.
The goal isn't perfection. It's giving your body regular opportunities to do what it was designed to do.
HOW THIS FITS INTO THE HEALTH PYRAMID
This is why movement has a place in our Health Pyramid.
Movement doesn't work independently from everything else we're talking about.
When we aren't sleeping well, we may have less energy to move. When we aren't nourishing our bodies properly, movement can feel harder. When we aren't moving, our sleep, metabolism, mood, strength, circulation and energy can all be affected.
Each layer influences the others.
And that is exactly why we're building this pyramid from the foundation up.
Health isn't one workout.
It isn't one healthy meal.
It isn't getting eight hours of sleep one night.
It's what happens when we begin looking at all of these pieces together.
So if you're reading this and realizing you haven't been moving very much lately, don't turn that realization into guilt.
Turn it into information.
Ask yourself:
How much am I actually moving throughout my day?
Where have I become more sedentary without realizing it?
What kinds of movement feel good in my body?
What is one realistic way I could move a little more?
We're not trying to completely overhaul our lives overnight.
We're learning how our bodies work so we can make better decisions about how we care for them.
And movement is one more piece of that foundation.
